1969: Case for a Rookie Filmmaker

1969: Case for a Rookie Filmmaker is a historical narrative game set in the world of Czechoslovak cinema after the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia in August 1968. Players step into the shoes of a young filmmaker trying to complete his first feature film while navigating censorship, surveillance, and a changing political climate. Inspired by the visionary filmmakers of the Czechoslovak New Wave, the game combines interactive storytelling with creative decision-making. Each choice (artistic, ethical, or political) shapes the protagonist’s career and the future of his film.

The game was developed as part of a broader educational initiative and offers opportunities for use in classrooms and group learning environments. A tailored educational programme invites students to reflect on the challenges faced by artists under authoritarian regimes and to draw connections to today’s struggles for freedom of expression.

The game is available in both museum and digital formats. For teachers, we offer a methodological guide and classroom materials to support meaningful engagement with the game in educational settings.
